Quick update

This is just a very quick update to say that tomorrow I head to the University of Durham and I imagine the next few weeks are going to be rather hectic.

Hopefully I’ll still be able to blog a bit but if not, rest assured I’ll be back [sometime] after freshers week!

Also I’ve paid for a review from Matt at Blogging Fingers, which should happen in the next week or so. I’m thoroughly looking forward to see what tips and advice he can give me for the blog.

Finally, just to tide you over, is Google metrosexual?

French advertising on facebook

French advertising on Facebook? That’s not very relevant! They can’t be getting a very high click through rate or many qualified customers if they’re showing it to non-French people.

Treating different content consumers… differently!

This is a topic that ChrisG has touched upon before (and probably others) but I believe it is an important one that deserves revisiting.

As a blogger you have to realise that people will consume your content in different ways. You will have organic search traffic, RSS subscribers, and referrals from other bloggers and social media sites.

5 killer tips for starting a search engine optimisation business

Earlier today I received an email asking for advice about starting an SEO business:

“I’ve been reading your blog and website a fair bit recently. In April of this year, I set up my own SEO company as a part-time venture whilst still working as an in-house SEO for a British company. I’m looking for this to become a full-time venture shortly and wondered what advice you could give to a young, enthusiastic person who really wants to do things the right way and make the most of this.”

I can only assume that he is yet to check out my about page, where he would discover I am also just a young, enthusiastic person, with no experience running a company (yet). My only experience is experimenting on my own projects with various different business models/monetization ideas.

Nevertheless, always one to provide as much help as possible, I have tapped into the knowledge of some industry contacts and other entrepreneurs, as well as my own advice to hopefully provide a few key points and tips that may help you succeed - it’s actually more than five but you have to try and write catchy headlines right?

So you want to get social?

If like me, you want to fully embrace and participate in social media/news etc. and also learn a thing or two along the way, you have to read lots of blogs!

So here, just for you, is a large list of all the interesting blogs I’ve been reading. I’ve categorised them in the same way they’re categorised in my feed reader, it’s not perfect because some blogs cover multiple topics!

Tesco Compare advert

I just saw a Tesco Compare (a new moneysupermarketesque site - for car loans) but weirdly the URL they promoted in the advert was to tesco.com not tescocompare.com.

I just thought that was a bit odd…

When is a blog not a blog?

When it’s a website that has been built using wordpress for convenience. Wordpress is a great CMS system and I love it. It’s so easy to set up and equally easy to use. There’d have to be a very good reason for me to NOT use wordpress on a web project these days otherwise I will, because I’m lazy and it’s easy.

I’ve recently launched a new small project, and it’s built on top of wordpress. The only thing blog like about it is that the content presentation is time based but really there are many non-blogs where the content is ordered chronologically by time.

Why am I rambling/ranting away?

Blogrush sucks so far

Out of 304 impressions I got 2 clicks. Woofuckinghoo. 0.66% click through rate. I guess it could be worse… perhaps?

It would actually be pretty cool if you were able to filter out some of your content for syndication because I don’t know how it chooses what to display but some of my content is certainly not my best and I’d rather only syndicate what I think is most likely going to grab others attention.

Eitherway, I have about 300 ‘credits’ left so I’ll probably leave it until they run out and then delete it unless I think of a compelling reason to keep it.

Some people have had more success with it, surprise surprise. It clearly works hugely in favour of big name bloggers who already receive loads of traffic.

Relative vs. absolute links revisited

So I was still unsure what the deal was with relative vs. absolute links from a search perspective so I’ve decided to dig around a little deeper for some answers.
